Happy New Year! If you have not already heard, there are many exciting events planned this year to commemorate the auspicious 125th anniversary of The Danish Home. These celebrations will honor the legacy the Danish Home’s founders forged, and will pay homage to Scandinavian contributions on American culture.
- Saturday, April 22nd – 125th KICK OFF CELEBRATION at the Renaissance Hotel in Schaumburg, IL
The Auxiliary of the Danish Home will honor the 12 founding women and the many achievements of Scandinavian women historically at this luncheon event.
- Saturday, June 24th – TIVOLI GARDENS & CASINO at The Danish Home
For this special year, instead of Summerfest, The Danish Home’s gardens will transform to celebrate famed Copenhagen attraction Tivoli Gardens, which will feature games, rides, live entertainment and much more! At night, try your luck at the casino.
- Thursday, August 10th – CUISINE & SPIRITS, 6:00 p.m.
The Danish Home of Chicago Chef Stig Hansen will create some of Scandinavian’s finest dishes and pair them with wine and beer to create a savory evening. Vote for your favorite spirit!
- Saturday, December 9th – Lillejuleaften, 5:00 p.m. Hyatt McDonald’s Campus, Oak Brook, IL
An Enchanting Christmas – Young and old are welcome to this favorite Danish Home tradition of a magical “little” Christmas with gifts from Santa and carols around the tree.
These events would not be possible without the many integral people who keep the DH functioning like a well-oiled machine. Besides seeing Mormor, one of my favorite parts about visiting is getting to know all of these wonderful people.
Recently, I got a chance to catch up with April Pasquale, Executive Assistant and Community Coordinator at The Danish Home. For the past 13 years, this Chicago gal has worked tirelessly to make The Danish Home a wonderful place to be. From setting tables to making crafts to sell at the annual Fall Fest, April’s joy comes from knowing that she has made someone’s day better.
She is a third generation Danish and German, and has learned that her great-grandparents, from both mother and father’s sides, lived in Schleswig-Holstein. April is a Jack-of-all-trades; you name it and she has done it. Whether it’s making a bed, giving tours, completing paperwork, planning events, overseeing the calendar for events and meetings, coordinating Home & Foundation Board Meetings, promoting The Danish Home in various ways, April is on it. However, there is one job she not do… windows!
