Last week I had mentioned that it was the 143rd anniversary of The Great Chicago Fire.  Since then I’ve come across some interesting ties between this historical event and The Danish Home.

Dania logo2The first connection was made after I discovered an interesting article buried inside the hope chest.  It is dated September 1, 1900 and describes how The Dania Society, a very significant and influential Danish organization established over 150 years ago in Chicago, was affected by the devastating fire of 1871, and how they have flourished since (you can read the article here).

Web-Dania-DAACAnniversaryCelebration101814I became so interested in learning more about this group that I went to visit Mormor at The Danish Home to find out more.  She tells me that The Dania Society often works together with The Danish Home of Chicago, the Danish American Athletic Club and The Danish Sisterhood of Chicago to sponsor many parties and celebrations, including The Danish Home’s monthly birthday party, run language classes, sponsor fun movie nights and organize events, including the upcoming annual Fall Fest this November 2.  As a matter of fact, this weekend the Dania Society and The DAAC are gathering for an anniversary and fund-raising event to commemorate all of their wonderful years together supporting the Danish-American community.  What a great celebration!

European Parliament in Strasbourg

While I was at The Danish Home visiting about The Dania Society I also learned that Christian Vistisen’s (a good friend of the home) grand-nephew was recently elected as one of Denmark’s 13 members to the European Parliament, a directly elected parliamentary institution of the European Union (EU).

Anders Primdahl

A friend of the family informed me that Anders Primdahl Vistisen, was born on November 12, 1987 in Skive Hospital. In 2006, he was an international trade student at the Skive Business School, and in 2013, he earned a Master of Law degree from the University of Aarhus. Today he is a politician from the Danish People’s Party, and has been a member of DFU since 2001.

In 2014, at the age of 26, he was elected as the youngest of all of the 751 MEPs of the European Parliament, who began their term in Strasbourg. Anders is a representative for European Conservatives and Reformists.

rebildWhen he was younger, Anders traveled with his parents to Chicago to visit his granduncle Christian, when Christian lived in the USA. Christian is now making his home in Viborg, Denmark and Christian catches up with his Danish-American friends each 4th of July at the Rebild Festival in Denmark.

I can’t tell you how excited and proud everyone at The Danish Home is of Anders’ achievement!
