Lifestyle

You are here:

At The Danish Home, loneliness vanishes.

On any given day, you might take joy in adult children and grandchildren, neighbors and volunteers, singers and dancers, or just fellow residents and staff. Summerfest, Fall Fest and Gab-fests incite laughter and happiness while exercise, crafts, games and outings stimulate the mind, body and spirit. Solitude in your own apartment or walking along our gorgeous garden paths can also renew your spirit. Since our community is small and intimate, staff has time and intention to create the lifestyle residents want.

Monthly birthdays, hosted and funded by the Women’s Auxiliary, are beloved celebrations for residents, families, and friends. There are grander events, too. Hundreds of people widely anticipate Summerfest throughout Chicago, especially in the neighborhood. They pass through The Danish Home gates to enjoy food, especially Smørrebrød – the famous open-faced Danish sandwiches – a variety of booths and children’s attractions. Live music by popular local bands is the festival’s main attraction. Other large-scale events are held during the year, too.

Staying active

Create your own or join in the scheduled activities planned by our expert lifestyle director. Fitness classes and religious services are reguarly offered. Crafts, often created for charity, like knitting hats for premature babies, are popluar activities. Movies, happy hours, and afternoon coffee al fresco on the patio during summertime bring friends and fellow residents together. Besides offering group crafting opportunities, the Home’s staff will encourage you in your own individual projects in any medium.

The Home’s fitness center offers residents the opportunity to stay strong and flexible. Staff helps residents learn how to use the senior-friendly equipment and exercise classes invite fun into your efforts to be the best you can be. Walks, indoors and out, are encouraged and enjoyed by many residents daily.

Outings - Together or On Your Own

Comfortably ride in our beautiful Danish Home bus to great places – like Chicago museums, the Morton Arboretum, Lake Geneva, a boat cruise, or countless other great venues organized by our creative team. Or, take your own car for outings to see family, friends, or the special places you enjoy.

Your apartment sanctuary

Your apartment is your sanctuary. Read by your window dappled by tree leaves in the breeze. Here you can adjust the temperature with your own thermostat, watch a movie or listen to the radio on the Home’s in house system, or enjoy surfing the Internet with your free Wi-Fi. Here you find privacy, but it remains secure since you emergency assistance is always near.
