The Danish Home of Chicago, a boutique senior living community in Norwood Park, is pleased to announce that Karen Nylen-Swidergal has been appointed as the new President of the Women’s Auxiliary. This dedicated group, founded in 1958 by Elna Lorentzen, plays a crucial role in supporting the social well-being of residents at The Danish Home. Through raising funds, volunteering their time, and contributing to The Home, the group vastly improves the quality of life of the beloved residents.
A member of the Women’s Auxiliary for over 10 years, Nylen-Swidergal brings a wealth of experience and passion to her new role. Having been involved with The Danish Home since she was a teenager, she has deep personal connections to the community. “There are so many memories at The Home,” Nylen-Swidergal shared. “A lot of the residents now are old friends of my parents, and I know them all. It’s got that warm feeling when you walk down the halls.”
Nylen-Swidergal’s long-standing involvement with The Danish Home includes running the bakery booth at the community’s Summerfest, which she eventually took over from her late mother. Her maternal grandfather was also a resident of The Danish Home. “It’s always been close to my heart, and I’m excited to continue the legacy of supporting the residents,” she said. Nylen-Swidergal, raised on the northside of Chicago, and now living in North Barrington, has an extensive background in family businesses, including real estate, trucking, and restaurant management. Being president of multiple separate groups, her leadership in the Women’s Auxiliary is sure to benefit both the residents and the organization.
One of Nylen-Swidergal’s future goals as president is to attract younger women to join the group. “I want to engage younger generations and build a vibrant group that can carry the mission of the Women’s Auxiliary into the future,” Nylen-Swidergal said. “It’s rewarding seeing the residents happy, and I want to make sure the organization continues to grow.”
In addition to her leadership and commitment to the Women’s Auxiliary, Nylen-Swidergal is also passionate about the close bond between the residents and volunteers. She recalls the resident’s joy from receiving handmade Valentine’s cards, which has been a favorite activity. “When the residents appreciate what we do for them, it really warms my heart,” she explained. “The laughter, the smiles—it’s what keeps me coming back.”
Nylen-Swidergal succeeds Karen Peterson, who served as president from 2021 to 2023. After leading the organization through several challenges, Peterson’s term ended in November 2024, including the COVID-19 pandemic. During her time as president, Peterson helped raise funds for renovations, including refurbishing one of the community’s bathrooms and installing armrests for the community’s bus. She also organized volunteer efforts such as monthly birthday parties and special gifts for the residents. “It was an honor to serve as president,” Peterson said. “The Women’s Auxiliary is a wonderful group of women, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of the residents.”
Although stepping down as president, Peterson remains on the board and continues to support the organization. She expressed confidence in Nylen-Swidergal’s leadership, stating, “Karen is going to do a fantastic job. She has great ideas, and I’m excited to see the direction she’ll take the Women’s Auxiliary.”
The Women’s Auxiliary, which consists of 21 board members and over 200 members, is an essential part of The Danish Home’s mission to enrich the lives of its residents. Women from all backgrounds are invited to join this vital volunteer group, with no special requirements other than a willingness to contribute to the community and support the residents.
Karen Nylen-Swidergal’s leadership marks an exciting new chapter for the Women’s Auxiliary, which continues to build on its rich history of service, social engagement, and community spirit.
