A New Horizon for The Danish Home of Chicago: Residents Celebrate Resilience and Anticipation Amid Ongoing Expansion

The very foundation of a boutique senior living community is being reimagined at The Danish Home of Chicago, and residents are filled with excitement anticipating the project’s results. As the finishing touches are added to a major expansion and renovation project that broke ground in 2023, the seniors who call The Danish Home their own are eagerly awaiting the grand reveal, including new living spaces and enhancements, all coming together in a way that promises to transform not only the building but the very heart of their community.

The construction project, set for completion in May, includes five new independent living one-bedroom apartments, nine private healthcare suites, and additional community renovations and upgrades. While the construction has presented its challenges, the residents’ resilience and patience have made them more excited than ever to see how their home will transform. As long-time resident Nora Bogehegn put it, “I have nothing to complain about, my excitement and anticipation for the project’s impact makes it easy to stay positive. What’s already here is wonderful, but we know it’s about to get even better.”

For Nora, the expansion marks the latest chapter in a life filled with transitions and transformation. “It’s a little noisy at times, sure, but the changes are exciting. We’ve had to adjust our dining room seating, and it’s fun to see healthcare staff and residents mingling with everyone more frequently. The garden space will be fantastic, and I’m really looking forward to being able to sit outside again, especially on a bench where we can water the flowers and enjoy the fresh air.”

Nora’s enthusiasm is shared by many of her neighbors. As the project nears its end, anticipation is building for the stunning new spaces, especially the garden area, which will provide a safe and serene place for residents to walk, sit, and connect with nature. “It’s going to be a peaceful place for all of us,” Nora says. “And for those with memory challenges, it’s a safe place to wander. It’s a wonderful addition.”

Robin Decker, Director of Resident Services, reflects on the journey, mentioning the resident’s constant positive outlook on the project. “Our residents have been incredibly adaptable, finding joy in watching the progress unfold right outside their windows. They are very excited about the finished product, and it’s been a beautiful reminder of how strong the sense of community here is.”

Daily walks around the Norwood Park neighborhood have become a highlight for many, as residents’ usual walking spaces aren’t available due to construction. Decker notes that the nearby neighbors have become acquainted with the residents, adding an extra layer of connection to the renovation process. “It’s been incredible watching the residents adapt and continually have an optimistic perspective during the construction.”

Scott Swanson, President and CEO of The Danish Home of Chicago, chimes in on the excitement as the project approaches completion. “We are incredibly proud of what The Danish Home has achieved and are eager to witness the completed project’s positive impact not only on our residents but the surrounding community as well. The new living spaces and upgrades will enhance the daily lives of our residents, providing a greater sense of comfort and belonging,” says Swanson. “It’s more than just a renovation and expansion; it’s a revitalization of the great care we take pride in here at The Danish Home. We can’t wait to share it with everyone.”

For Nora and many others, The Danish Home has always been a place where memories are cherished, and new connections are formed. “This has always been more than just a building to me,” she says. “It’s part of my life, my community. And now, watching it grow and improve, I feel like we’re all growing with it. I can’t wait to see what the next chapter holds.”

As the construction dust settles and the final touches are made, the residents of The Danish Home of Chicago are eagerly looking forward to the next chapter in a community that’s been, and will continue to be, a home full of friendship, shared history and outstanding care for independent, catered, and healthcare residents.
